    3.1. What is X10?

X-10 is a communications “language” that allows you to control lights, appliances and other equipment in your house via the existing 220-230V electrical wiring in your house. No costly rewiring is necessary. X-10 Home Automation products can be installed easily and … moved easily. So not only if you own your house X-10 is the best Home Automation system, but also when you rent a house or an appartement. When you move, just take your Home Automation system with you and install it in your new house. It is as easy as that. No other Home Automation system gives you so much convenience and flexibility. X-10 Home Automation systems are designed to be installed by yourselves. Yes, it is that easy. Or you can let a technician install it for you. The choice is up to you. X-10 is a simple technique that can be used and installed by the average do-it-yourselfer. Our tech support department is specially trained to help you with your installation. X-10 is simple and uses only Transmitters and Receivers to control lights and appliances.

    3.2. X10 technical information

X-10 transmissions are synchronised to the zero-crossing point of the AC power line. Power line interfaces provide 50Hz square wave with a max. delay of 100 µsec. from the zero crossing point to the AC power line. The maximum delay between signal enveloppe input and 120 kHz output bursts is 50 µsec.
A binary 1 is represented by a 1 millisecond burst of 120 kHz, at the zero crossing point and a binary 0 by the absence of 120 kHz. These 1 millisecond bursts are transmitted three times to coincide with the zero crossing points of all three phases in a three phase distribution system.

3.3. Set up of the system

The X10 system consists of Transmitters/Controllers and Modules/Receivers:

    Transmitters/Controllers

These Transmitters send a signal and send a command on the powerline to Receivers. Transmitters commonly used are Computer interfaces, Remote Controls (IR/RF), Telephones,...

    Receivers/modules

Receivers control lights and appliances. X-10 Receivers are available in 3 types: plug-in, built-in and DIN-rail. Each Receiver has a House Code ( a letter A-P) and a Unit Code (number 1-16) that uniquely identifies it among 256 different possible combinations. When a Receiver "hears" its unique code, it responds by turning ON, OFF, dimming or brightening the light, appliances, devices,..

3.4. The advantages of the X10 system

The X10 system is unique in the world of Home Automation because it uses the existing 220V Powerline to communicate its signals and is simple and inexpensive:

    • It is ideal for applications in existing houses
    • NO extra wiring is necessary which means low-cost solutions
    • Easy-to-install
    • For simple applications no intelligent units are necessary which makes the system cheap and efficient
    • For bigger applications Powerful Interfaces with easy-to-use software are available
    • The X-10 IntelliHome system provides 2-Way communication with possibility of status-control because the X-10 system is widespread (more than 5 million installations worldwide) the systems are manufactured on a large scale which results in low prices.
    • Unlimited possibilities: switching, dimming, sunscreen control, integration with alarm systems,...

3.5. What X10 Home Automation can do for you

The installation of an X10 system is very simple to increase your convenience and security.

    • Automatic control of outside- and security lights.
    • Simulate presence in your house while you are away
    • With radio Frequency Remote Controls you can turn on anything in- and outside your house.
    • You can program your X10 IntelliHome system to perform macro's like "All lights on" or "Morning mode" to manage your house in a simple way according to your way of life.
    • Wireless Switches make it possible to install switches at places where there are no wires.
    • Also ideal for temporary installations.
    • Adapting homes for the elderly or disabled people becomes easy and flexible. By using wireless remote controls they have everything controlled by a simple button.
